The process of designing three-way floorstanding Old School Wind was aimed towards creating speakers with powerful, neutral and delicate sound. Cabinet is made of specially selected materials for less coloration and low internal reflections. Top, bottom and side panels of the cabinet enclosure are made of plywood; front and back are made from multilayer soundless material called Aphonic-pro.
Highest frequencies are produced by 30mm tweeter which is custom made according to our specifications and features the Acuflex technology. Fabric dome is impregnated with specially engineered damping compound responsible for compensating distortions caused by break-up modes. Tweeter is recessed into the shallow horn waveguide accounting for better dispersion. Above and below the tweeter sit two 5-inch midrange drivers with CURV cones. Made of specifically woven synthetic fibers, extremely light and rigid CURV ensures better damping. Two bass drivers complete the loudspeaker array. Each custom made bass driver features 8-inch paper cone and phase plug. Transducers powered by the Balanced Drive technology produce electromagnetic force symmetrically affecting the voice coils which helps reducing harmonics distortion.
To ensure the cohesion between drivers the crossover is made of High End components including wirewound non-inductive resistors with bifilar winding and polypropylene capacitors. Manually made crossover cabling via point-to-point wiring uses single-core copper wires. Speaker cable binding posts feature WBT nextgen 0705 CU sockets. Low Mass technology (with minimum mass of the conductive part) ensures shortest possible signal path.
Additional 25mm tweeter is positioned on the rear panel. It helps creating spacious, widely dispersed and tangible stereo soundstage, as well as expanded radiation pattern. Rear tweeter’s mechanical three-position phase switch (in phase, out of phase, off) allows for adding and subtracting reflections which helps achieving better sound in both resonant and damped rooms. With this switch one can control stereo imaging and adjust the reproduction to the specific characteristics of listening room.
Old School Wind’s cabinet is finished with real wood veneer (oak, black ash or walnut) with anthracite front panel, which is fully covered by removable black grille with magnetic fixings.
Due to high sensitivity these responsive speakers may be partnered with almost any amp, delivering an airy, transparent and powerful sound. A spacious listening room allows for fully realized dynamic capabilities; due to the widely adjustable sonic characteristics Wind are welcomed in most use cases.
